Hubert K. "Cookie" Cooke, 92, retired Boeing employee, died Saturday, September 8, 2001. He was born June 29, 1909, to Dr. A.B. & Margaret (Alexander) Cooke on a farm near Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas. He started grade school in a one room school house known as the Judy School and it was during those years that his family moved to a farm south of Hepler, Crawford County, Kansas. His remaining grade school and high school years were at the Hepler schools where he graduated with the class of 1931. During his youth he was known over several counties for his tenor voice, winning several award trophies as well as performing at many weddings, programs and funerals.

Along with farming, he tried his hand at a rural route selling S.F. Baker Products. On April 25, 1932, he married Hazel K. Attkisson, in the parsonage of the Hepler Methodist Church. In 1937 when word came that there were jobs in Wichita, he and his wife packed up and moved where he took employment at the Bridgeport Machine Company. He also worked at Stearman Aircraft, Carl Graham Paint & Wallpaper Company, and then bought and operated a Standard Oil filling station for several years at Kellogg and Hydraulic in Wichita.

When the war broke out, he hired on at Boeing Aircraft doing janitorial work. In time, he went on to parts expediting and shop foreman. After 29 years he retired on his 60th birthday and indulged in his hobbies and travel for many years.

He was a member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, and the Epworth Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur. He is survived by his widow of the home, two daughters, Glenda Lee Sill, and Phyllis Elaine Dendy, both of Wichita, a sister, Winona P. Nix of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Wichita, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
