CONOVER Mildred R. Knauff, 87, of Conover passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.

Born Nov. 22, 1923 in Darke County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Jacob E. and Clara Louise Althoff Albrecht.

She was an elementary school teacher in Ohio and New York State and Banoak Elementary School for 16 years. She was a member of Miller's Lutheran of Hickory and Old St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Newton. She was Program Chairman for Newton Seniors for quite a few years, Women of the ELCA conference officer, member of AARP, NC Association of Educators, Catawba Valley Community Chorus, church choirs, and Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies were basket weaving, knitting, bread making, and jam preserving.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Philip Luther Knauff; brothers, Carl Albrecht and John Albrecht; and sisters Magdalene Stirm and Martha Shultz.; and daughter-in-law Judy Meisel Knauff. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Rev. Luther L. Knauff of the home; children, Karen Pairan and her husband, Ron of Millers Port, Ohio, Dr. Mark John Knauff and his wife, Joy of Acworth, Ga., Dr.Lois Knauff and her husband, Mike Maness of Raleigh, and Craig Martin Knauff of Hickory; seven grandchildren, Rev. Tom Pairan and his wife, Ann, Scott Pairan, Lisa Gammalo and her husband, Cary, Michelle Sturdivant and her husband, Nick, Kelly Palmer and her husband Nate, Tim Knauff and his wife, Kristen, and Philip Maness; three great-grandchildren, Matilda Knauff, Porter Knauff, and Jonathan Pairan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Old St. Paul Lutheran Church in Newton. The Rev. Robert Sain will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Her family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Old St. Paul Parrish Hall in Newton.
