Abel Shuford was the son of Jacob H. Shuford aand Katherine Baker. He enlisted in Company F, 23rd N.C. Regiment at the age of 19. He fought at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, and in the Seven Day's Campaign. He was severely wounded at Cold Harbor. He was at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg,where he was wounded and was taken prisoner and sent to Ft. Delaware and then Point Lookout.

After the war he returned to Hickory, North Carolina, where he became a successful manufacturer and banker. He was married to Alda V. Campbell. They had three sons and five daughters.
