Dr J C Burton Pioneer Druggist Passes Away

Dr J C Burton pioneer Stroud druggist who lacked only a little of being 86 years old passed away at the family home last Friday morning.

He was one of Stroud's foremost citizens and brought Stroud to the attention of the state and nationally. He came to Stroud in April 1898 and established a drug store. He was one of the three first druggists to receive a certificate after Oklahoma became a state. He served a term as President of the National Boards of Pharmacy under Governors C N Haskell and Lee Cruse. He was also inspector for the board under William H Murray. Dr Burton was very active in county and state political circles being a staunch democrat serving as Democratic Central committee-exposed man of Lincoln county for 34 years. He was a practicing physician in Kansas before corning to Oklahoma but gave up practicing when he moved to this state.

Dr Burton as born May 29 1833 in Randolph county Mo and was married to Dora Ellen Miller November 22 1883 in Shenandoah Iowa.

Dr and Mrs Burton moved to Stroud in April 1898 and resided here until their death Mrs ' Burton passing on eight years ago. The doctor is survived by three sons Glade C Burton Stroud L W Burton Washington D C and D V Burton of Arkansas City Kans four daughters Mrs Mabel B Franklin Los Angeles Calif Mrs W W Baker Tulsa Mrs S E Jondahl Texas and Miss Daisie E Burton Stroud 16 grandchildren and two great grand children.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Burton residence being conducted by Rev W H Alexander pastor of the First Christian church Interment was in Rose Hill mausoleum in Tulsa.
