Virgil Barker was born on January 7, 1881 to Aaron Barker (1846-1927) and Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Loyd (1852-1906) in Magazine, Logan County, Arkansas. Virgil had 12 brothers and sisters Napoleon, Minnie Barker Wann Loyd, Madgie Barker Loyd. Lewis. Jottie, Roscoe [his twin], Eugene, Penina Barker Cotton, Effie Barker Osborn, Bessie, Norman, Bertiman “Bert” and 5 half-brothers and sisters: Ebbie Barker Suttle, Clinta Barker Beam, Peck, Paul, and Rose Barker Parnell.
Virgil married Dorothea M. Slaten August 17, 1902, Logan County, Arkansas. They had 8 children:
