Death Takes Former City commissioner, 84

William J. Rackham, 84, of 2521 Jackson, died this morning at an Ogden nursing home of causes incident to age.
Mr. Rackham was born Jan. 13, 1887, in Ogden, a son of William G. and Jane Batley Rackham. he was educated in the Ogden City schools. As a young man he worked as an accountant for the Browning Brothers Store and as an accountant and salesman for Ogden Wholesale Grocery co.
He was married to Eva S. Geiger on Oct. 16, 1907, in Ogden. They later received the endowments in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died Jan 17, 1965.
In 1928 he began his political career when he was elected Ogden City Commissioner. In 1932 he was defeated for mayor, but was re-elected commissioner in 1934, serving until 1942.

PUBLIC WORKS

During his term as commissioner, the present City-county Building, the Ogden Municipal Airport, El Monte Golf Course and many other public works were constructed. Later he served as Streets and Water Department supervisior.
He was an active member of the Republican party, former manager of the Woodmansee estate and also operated the Rackham Food Brokerage Co. He was active in the United Commercial Travelers organization.
An active member of the LDS Church, he was a high priest in the Ogden 12th ward at the time of his death. He was a former superintendent of Sunday School in the Weber Stake, a high priest group leader and former home missionary.

12 GRANDCHILDREN

Surviving are three sons and one daughter, William J. Rackham Jr., Centralia, Wash.; Col. Karl M. Rackham, Corpus Christi, Tex.; John B. Rackkham, Alexandria, Va.; Mrs. Connie R. Bowe, Clearfield; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Laura Shimp, Downey, Calif.; Mrs. Clara Snow, Long Beach, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Lindquist and Sons colonial Chapel, with Bishop George Bell Officiating, and Tuesday prior to services. Interment will be in the Ogden City cemetery.
