Lura Lee Dewoody was the only child of William Akin Dewoody, (1830-1862) and Lucy Ann Tanner. Her father was killed in action on May 9, 1862 at the battle of Mill Creek, in Limestone County. This battle took place about 7 miles north of Elkmont, Alabama. Lura was first married to Henry Baulden Cate of East Tennessee. After his death, she married Arthur Marcus Simpson April 20, 1880 in Madison County, Alabama. By Arthur she had two children, the eldest, Ida Harris, died as infant, and the younger, Arthur Marcus Jr., survived to have descendants. Her third husband was Philip H. Winfield who had two sons by Lura, Leon Winston and William. Phillip and Lura were later divorce, and despite her having custody of her sons, Philip also known as Patrick H. Winfield, kidnapped the sons and took them to Memphis, the younger son named William apparently died at a young age, for we no longer know what became of him. Leon the elder son, lived to have descendants I knew him personally by correspondence. Lura's fourth and last marriage to Charles Kelly Thomas took place in the city of Decatur, Alabama Charles was Chief of Police in Morgan County, Alabama. By Charles they had four children. Mamie, Murry, Charles Kelly, and Minnie. Only Minnie survived to have descendants. When and where Lura actually died remains a mystery. According to Grace Leona Simpson, wife of Arthur Marcus Simpson Jr., his mother was suppose to be buried in the Athens Cemetery, Athens, Alabama. She was also suppose to have a large marble tombstone. However, while in the Athens City Cemetery, this compiler found no such tombstone. It is believe she was actually buried in a cemetery in Morgan County, probably beside her last husband. Charles Thomas who has a tombstone, but there is nothing for Lura Lee (Dewoody) Thomas.
