Died aged 38 years. Son of Nestor Baker and Anna Spaulding, husband of Lucy Cross.

He was recorded residing in Aurora in the 1860 US Census (in household of Edwin Gates; occupation Jeweler): in the 1865 Illinois Census (1 white male under 10, 1 white male 20-30, 1 white female 20-30); in the 1870 US Census (in household of L.C. Lee; occupation Jeweler; he has no family members with him).

Cemetery map shows the lot owner as H. Baker. List of lot sales, which seems to date from late 1850's to mid 1870's, shows owner as N. Baker, with no sales date or price (many "sales" recorded are post dated by decades, so likely this lot was in use very early). Two children of Leonidas Baker (another son of Nestor) apparently buried at Spring Lake Cemetery, died before that cemetery opened. (Fayette Baker, age 2, born in Illinois, died in Aurora in October 1849, of dysentery, and is listed in the 1850 mortality schedule.) There are several bases and broken off white marble stones in this lot, and a small stone which might have been a footstone.

Nelson G. Baker married Lucy Cross on 12 Nov 1863 in Kane Co., IL.

From contributor Coleen Mielke (#47197858): "Nelson G. Baker was born 1837 in New York to Nestor Baker and Anna Spaulding. He is also my 2nd great grand uncle."

1850 Census, Aurora, IL, shows household of Nestor Baker: Nestor, 57, Ann, 53, Samuel B., 28, Emeline, 20, Marian D., 18, Charlotte A., 17, and Nelson G., 13, all born in New York.

B. Franklin Baker, born 26 July 1864 Aurora, died 10 Apr 1939 in Kewaunee, Henry, IL. Burial was in Chicago. Parents listed as Nelson Baker & Lucy Cross; spouse Mary Baker.

1880 Census, Sheffield, Bureau, IL, shows Lucy L. Baker, 34, born IL, widowed, with son Frank B. Baker, 16, born IL.

Lucy L. Baker married Charles A. Davis on 25 Oct 1888 in Henry Co., IL. One record shows her as Lucy L. Arons Baker, 43, born IL, daughter of Henry Arons & Martha Spaulding. (I suspect "Arons" is a misreading of "Cross".) Charles A. Davis was 61, born Massachusetts, son of Danfor Davis & Miss Millerb [sic].

Baker genealogies show Nestor Baker was born 2 Oct 1793 Ft. Ann, Washington Co., NY, died 16 March 1856 Aurora, Kane, IL; wife Ann/Anna Spaulding/Spalding born 1797, died 26 July 1878 Knox Co., IL.

NOTE (2 Feb 2016): See memorial #74389399 - Carrie Baker, buried 26 July 1878, age 82 years. This is likely Anna Spaulding Baker.

Samuel Baker married Mary Ann Ward(e), and their family (2 sons and a daughter, Lizza J., age 0) were living in Aurora in 1860 along with Ann & Charlotte Baker. In 1870 S.B, Mary and 2 sons are still in Aurora. In 1880, Samuel, Mary & son Rollin are in Centerville, Lancaster. Nebraska. Samuel's son Emerit E. married Jennie Halline in Henry Co., IL, in 1900. Charlotte (#11648909) married Peter Innes (#136009151). Marian Baker married Jonathan/John Vaill, and their family lived in Knox Co. along with Anna in 1870.
