Mr. William George "Billy George" Calhoun, age 82, of Southport, Fla., died on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at a local hospital.

He was born in Mossy Head, Fla., to the late William Henry Calhoun and Lela Keene Calhoun. After the death of his mother, "Billy George" was raised by Carrie Wright Calhoun. He was a lifetime resident of this area and retired from Bellsouth Telephone Co. as a lineman and was Baptist by faith. He was a member of Harry Jackson Masonic Lodge 314 F&AM; the Shaddai Shriners; the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and the National Rifle Association. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by a son, William George "Little George" Calhoun; a sister, Mary Benoit; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Odom; two brothers-in-law, Norman Padgett and Cecil Cosson; and a niece, Ginger Cunningham.

Graveside Masonic services will be conducted by Harry Jackson Masonic Lodge 314 F&AM at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Oakland Cemetery. The Masonic lodge will open at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home prior to the graveside service. Mr. Calhoun's grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Sapp, Lloyd Gilmore, Jim Baker, H.E. Ellis and Fred Williams.
