George T. Ashton

George T. Ashton, 88, of Spring Meade Health Center, formerly of Piqua died at 12:36 p.m. Friday March 13, 2009, at Grandview Hospital, Dayton.

He was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Piqua to the late William and Vivian (Conn) Ashton. On Feb. 28, 1942, in Piqua he married Dorothy J. Pook and she preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 1997. On March 11, 2000, he married Joyce Wells in Columbus. She survives.

George also is survived by one son, Terry Ashton of Covington; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ed Byczek, Titusville, Fla.; one brother, Conn Ashton of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two grandchildren and five

great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Tim Ashton; two brothers and two sisters.

George was a graduate of Piqua Central High School. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Piqua. Mr. Ashton was very active in Piqua and Miami County. He was a member of the Energy Board in Piqua, on the Board of Elders at St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church, on the Board of Miami County Foundation, and a park commissioner on the Miami County Parks, and also on the Bethany Center Board.

George was a member and past commander of the Piqua American Legion Post 184. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Pioneer Electric in Piqua for several years. He then, worked in Economic and development for Buckeye Power.

Memorial Service will conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Piqua with the Rev. Frank Sapp officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home.

In Lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church 500 N. Downing St. Piqua, OH 45356 or Miami County Park District 2645 E. State Route 41 Troy, OH 45373 or Miami County Foundation 317 N. Wayne St. Piqua, OH 45356.
