Some family members thought his name was John Patrick Langan, but "Patrick" as a middle name does not appear on any official document.

Parents:
John was the son of James Langan (1831-1922) and Katherine Gallager (1831-c1922). His father had emigrated from Ireland, worked as an indentured servant for the Gray family near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania according to the oral family tradition. He took his wife and unmarried children back to Ireland with him around 1910 where he died in 1922.

He was born in March of 1860 according to the 1900 United States census. The family appears in the 1870 United States census living in Williams Township, Northampton, Pennsylvania. Williams Township is 10 miles east of Bethlehem, Northampton, Pennsylvania. Secular vital record keeping for Pennsylvania begin in 1905. In the 1860 census his father was listed as a laborer.

Langan (1892-1950) who was a school teacher who never married; John F. Langan (1893) who died as an infant; Cornelius Langan (1893-1896) who died as a child; Bernard Langan II (1895) who died as an infant; Mary Langan III (1895-?); Bernard Langan III (1895-1898); Ann Langan (1898-1939) who married Francis Ayers; Charles E. Langan (1899-1996) who was a welder who married May Cornetta; Bernard Francis Langan (1903-1982) who married Anna Fortmuller; and John Langan II (1905) who died as an infant. The 1900 US census says that they had 10 children with 5 living, but the 5 is crossed out and a 10 is written above it.

His funeral notice was published in the Jersey Journal on Wednesday, April 9, 1930: "On Sunday, April 6, 1930, John beloved husband of Catherine Langan (nee Devaney), and father of Daniel, James, Anna, Charles, and Bernard Langan. Relatives and friends, also Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Victories Church, are invited to attend the funeral from residence 288 Ege Avenue, on Thursday, 9 am. Thence to Our Lady of Victories Church where solemn high mass of requiem will be offered for the happy repose of his soul. Arrangements by James M. Houghton."
