Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Having graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1855, he practiced law and raised cotton and was a member of the Darlington Guards prior to the Civil War. Joining the Pee Dee Battery as a Captain in 1861, he took command of his own battalion as Major in 1863, and his battalion had the distiction of firing the first rounds of artillery at Gettysburg. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1864 and Colonel in 1865. Following the Civil War, he practiced law in Towson, Maryland, and served as President of the Maryland Bar Association. He was the brother-in-law of Confederate General John Pegram and Colonel Willie J. Pegram.
