General Sumner developed several islands in Boston Harbor, resulting in what is now known as East Boston. During this time, Sumner founded several companies, including the East Boston Company and The East Boston Lumber Company. As a tribute to his effort for the development East Boston the Sumner Tunnel that runs under the Boston Harbor from East Boston to Boston was named in his honor.

In 1818 William Sumner was appointed Adjutant General of the State Militia, a position he held for 16 years and which title he retained for the rest of his life

His marble monument marks him as "A Loyal Patriot, A Useful Citizen, And A Steadfast Friend."

First in 1826 to the widow of Raymond Henry Jones Perry (died 1826) whose brothers Oliver Hazard Perry and Matthew Calbraith Perry were well-known Navy officers.
