John Arthur “Art” Grimes died at the Jefferson Hospital on October 4, 1956, at the age of 73 years, two months, and nine days. He had been in ill health since September of 1955.
He was born in Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on July 25, 1883, the son of John Wesley and Sarah Ann (Shoemaker) Grimes. Later that year with his parents and siblings he moved to the Dallas Center, Iowa, vicinity where the family lived on a farm until as a young man Art moved to Adel.
On March 4, 1911, he married Ethel M. Boyd at Adel, Iowa. In 1913 they moved to the Jefferson vicinity, where they made their home on a farm south of town. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Gem Masonic Lodge No. 429 A.F. and A.M., both of Paton.
He was survived by his wife, Ethel; a daughter Madeline Langwith of Des Moines; a son John Grimes of California. Three sisters, Gertrude Forester, Eva Smith and Cora Grimes, all of Adel, also survive. His funeral was held October 7, 1956 at the Paton Methodist Church. Interment was in the Jefferson Cemetery.
