Her death followed that of her husband, B.F., a little less than five months ago. She was born January 21, 1847 in Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Sweet) Tryon. Coming with her parents to Iowa in 1868, the Tryon family settled near Blencoe and hewed out their home from the native logs of the forest.
She was an early teacher in the little country school, teaching the short terms then held among the pioneer families' children and helped with the farm work out of school hours. In 1871 she was married to B.F. Boutwell, a veteran of the Civil War.
