Richard Hall Austin, 77, of Irvington, where he resided on his boat the S/V Eve died on Friday, September 9, 2011.
He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on September 1, 1934, the son of the late Emory Hall Austin and Hazel Salyer Austin Alexander.
He graduated from Newtown High School in Elmhurst, New York. In 1962, Mr. Austin received his B.A. in Physics from the University of Virginia and in 1967 received his M.S. in Information Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his career working for the Sperry Gyroscope Company in Great Neck, New York. He joined the RLES staff, School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia and later the Alderman Library. On leave from the university, he worked for the School of Information Science at George Tech, returning as Assistant Professor and Director of the Science-Technology Information Center, University of Virginia Library in 1968.
He retired from the Foreign Science and Technology Center (FSTC), Department of the Army, as Chief of the Technical Information Branch in 1986. He was a member of the Trigon Engineering Society, United States Naval Institute, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Surviving are three nieces, a nephew, a cousin, and his long-time friend, Ann Trenary Symmers.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Austin and a brother, Emery Hall Austin Jr.
