(from a letter by Marian Byrne, Clara’s daughter)
My mother, Clara, was a good sewer. She made all our dresses and dad’s shirts. She could take an old coat and make a new one for us kids. She sewed for a lot of people. We always had new dresses and coats and hats for Christmas and Easter. Gloria had many bonnets. Every time she (Clara) came she had a new one.
She was a great cook and a special planner for all events. Our house was always a great party place. She was always ready to travel, near or far. Dad didn’t care too much for traveling, but she did. I miss her very much.
There were five girls in our family: Hazel, Alice, Margaret, Ann, and me. Every Sunday after Church we went somewhere for dinner.
Mama died at the hospital in LaCrosse. She had a stroke. She was a hard worker like her mother, but never had much to work with. If only they had what we have today -- washers, dryers, electricity, cars, toilets. She would have been in seventh heaven.
