Father: Thomas Ashley Swift
Mother: Eliza Mattison
Married in 1833

Son Hoyt Ashley Swift was born 6 Dec 1833 in Batavia, Genessee, NY. The family moved from NY to Michigan in 1840 and started farming in Genessee Co., Michigan. The county was named Genessee in 1836 in order to attract settlers from Genessee New York.

When Hoyt was age 27 he married Lucy Sutton on 3 Mar 1858. Lucy was age 17 and they were married by her father Richard Sutton, a Methodist Episcopal Church clergyman. Lucy had completed 4 years of schooling in the Leoni Seminary near Jackson, MI. and her education then was equivalent to a 4 year college degree now. This was an unusual accomplishment for a woman in 1858.

Hoyt and Lucy moved in Dec. 1858 to Eaton Rapids, MI. and on 3 Mar 1859 their daughter Hattie was born. A little over 3 years later on 2 Aug, 1862 Hoyt enlisted as a private in Co. G Michigan 20th INF to fight in the Civil War. He fought in 27 battles, was engaged under fire for 390 days and was severely wounded. However, he reenlisted and was present in Washington DC with his 20th Michigan regiment when President Lincoln did his Grand Review of troops 23 May 1865. He served in the Civil War 2y 9m 20d and collected his pay of $75.00 when he mustered out.

After returning home, a second child was born on 17 Mar 1866 and they named her Belvia. The following year Hoyt purchased 1 1/2 acres of land with a house for $120.00 in the town of Eaton Rapids. Hoyt could have qualified for more land being a veteran and homesteader, but he had suffered during the war and was granted an invalid pension by the Fed. Govt.

On 8 Jan 1869 their daughter Beulah was born, however her life was short, and she died at 26 days old of lung fever on 3 Feb 1869. A 4th child was born in Eaton Rapids 26 Nov 1870 and was named Thomas Lee Swift, but they renamed him Herman sometime after 1880. Their last child was a daughter named Blenn who was born 22 Jan 1874.

Lucy died 18 Aug 1890 as a result of an injury to her arm from which she was unable to recover and 4 years later Hoyt died on 17 Aug 1894. Two years later the 4 Swift children sold the house in town for $750.00.
