Jack was an expert machinist for fifteen years. He and his wife, Mable owned motel in Nephi, Utah. At the motel he had some life size decorative deer out front. He could see them from his kitchen window, he put little speakers under their chins and ran a wire from them to the house. Then he would wait for some children to come by and play with them and he would talk to the children, all the while watching their reactions to the talking deer.
He and two of his sons constructed a decorative rock wall in his motel office using colorful rock found in west Juab County. After much ingenuity, foresight and labor Jack Robinson has developed a full-scale hobby. He had constructed no less than 24 beautiful, ornamental coffee tables and many other decorative objects by 1969. These show in detail the exquisite natural color and designs in formation and what the rocks look like inside.
