Herman Lange, Sr., age 96 of Burton, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2011.

He was born February 9, 1915 in the Gay Hill Community of Washington County, Texas to parents Julius and Louise (Petrick) Lange. Herman was baptized October 17, 1915 at St. John's UCC of Gay Hill by Pastor Ralimeyer Wangelisdua and confirmed in the same church on October 12, 1930 by Pastor Adolpha Walton. He attended Mound Hill and Hoddeville Schools. On September 16, 1942, he was united in marriage to Hildagard Boeker by Pastor Martin Ernest in St. John's UCC of Gay Hill.

Herman served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a cook and barber. In Herman's life, he worked at Gay Hill General Store, Brenham Wholesale, L. Hausmann Grocery, Robert Lange and Jimmie Hahn. Herman was City Marshall of Burton. He and brother-in-law "Peanut " Boeker co-owned Boeker Feed & Seed. Herman and Hildagard owned and operated H&H Grocery in Burton for 13 years. In 1972, Herman retired from his grocery business and worked in ranching. For 4 years, he drove a bus for Burton Schools.

He was a member of St. John's UCC of Burton, serving on church council for 8 years. His other services and memberships included: Burton Fire Department, Burton Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Buddy Wright Post #48 for 50 years, Texas Farm Bureau and P.T.A. of Brenham for over 50 years. Herman enjoyed working the cattle on his ranch, gardening and yard work. Herman loved to dance all his life.

Herman is preceded in death by parents, brothers and sisters-in-law Charlie and Alma Lange, Henry Lange, Walter and Annie Lange, sisters and brothers-in-law Ella and Henry Duesterhoft, Mathilde and Herman Meyer, nephews Eugene Duesterhoft and David Lange.

Survivors include: loving wife of nearly 69 years, Hildagard (Boeker) Lange of Burton; son Herman Lange, Jr. and his partner-in-life Jolene Broach of Bryan; grandchildren Dodd Lange and wife Mary and Misti Lange; great-grandchildren Logan and Adyson; sister-in-law Marie Lange Meyer; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2011 at St. John's United Church of Christ of Burton with Rev. Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dodd Lange, Logan Lange, Delbert Boeker, Tommy Lange, Darrell Kieke and Melvin Schoenst.

Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Reeves, Dr. Henry Boehm, Jr., Dr. Robert Haydon, T. W. Wimberly, Gene Maynard, Wesley Holloway, Charlie Hodde and Glenwood Schwartz.

Memorials may be given to St. John's UCC of Burton Building Fund, Hospice or charity of choice.
