Nina Nathan Kamin, born Nina Lee Nathan in New Orleans on the 6th of November 1919, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, the 18th of September 2011.
A resident of Houston since the age of two, she graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1936 and went on to attend the University of Southern California before returning to Houston.
Nina met the first love of her life, Jerome Chapman, and they married on the 7th of November 1938. Nina & Jerry were blessed with three devoted children - Linda, Andrew and Susan. In 1965, Nina was widowed at the young age of 45. On the 3rd of September 1971, Nina married the second love of her life, Jake Kamin.
Nina's creative style was something that influenced every part of her life. From her years as a jewelry buyer and designer to her talent to create beauty in everything that she touched, she expressed her innate ability to make the world around her and others more meaningful. Nina's immaculate attention to detail was intrinsic in everything she did.
Known for her style and grace, Nina was always there to extend her wisdom and life experiences to her friends and loved ones. Nina's compassion and thoughtfulness toward others had no boundaries. She was often called upon for comfort, support and guidance and she gave of herself unselfishly.
Nina was pre-deceased by her parents, Etta and Tobe Nathan; husbands, Jerome Chapman and Jake Kamin; Nina's daughter, Linda Chapman Golden; Jake's daughter, Karen Kamin Armer; and lifelong devoted friend, Octavia "Red" Mitchell.
Nina is survived by her sister, Loyce Nathan Boarnet; son, Andrew Chapman and his wife Maria; daughter, Susan Chapman Smith and her husband Alec; son-in-law, Nathan "Sonny" Golden; Nina's grandchildren, Adam Smith, Lauren Smith, Nathan Chapman and his wife Kim, Jeremy Chapman; and Jake's grandchildren, Lisa Dudley and her husband Matt, Gunnar Thelander, Kristen Thelander, and Cindi Smith and her husband Steve; great-grandchildren, Caleb Dudley and Jacob Dudley; brother-in-law, Max Kamin and his wife Dawn; sister-in-law, Margie Kamin; nephew, Bernie Boarnet and his wife Esther; niece, Luann Boarnet Cohen and her husband Larry; and many other beloved nieces and nephews.
Her family wishes to thank Drs. Bobby Alford, Adelaide Hebert, Alice McPherson, Susan Miller and Albert Raizner for their loving care. They would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Maria DeLeon, Gloria Castillo, Albert Walker, Gladys Pereda and Monserrat Pereda. Special thanks must also be given to the dedication and compassion of caregivers Nette Baker, Camil Boyd, Lucy Graves, Annie Hutchison and Delinda Walker.
A memorial service is to be conducted at half-past eleven o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 21st of September, in the main sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Boulevard in Houston, where Rabbi David Lyon and Cantor Daniel Mutlu are to officiate.
