Jack Nelson Averitt, a lifelong resident of Statesboro died early Sunday at his residence. He was a member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church for sixty-six years where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, organist, Choir Director, and soloist. He joined Bethel Baptist Church in 2001. Dean Emeritus of the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies and Professor Emeritus of History, he served Georgia Southern University for thirty-five years. A leader in academic, civic and cultural pursuits at the community, state, national, and international levels, Rotary International presented him the Distinguished Service Award, one of five at the time in the Rotary world for his endeavors in International Service. The citation read "His selfless work in expanding human horizons to encompass the globe has served two great causes: peace through understanding and progress through knowledge."

The funeral service for Mr. Averitt will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Shortell and Dr. Delma E. Presley officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
