After the Civil War, Clarington's family moved from NY to Howard Co, Iowa then to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where he grew to adulthood.

He married Mary Fader, the daughter of Lodawick Fader and Jane McNeill at Jackson, Minnesota on Nov. 3, 1880. She divorced him for "desertion" on Nov. 23, 1885. Within her deposition for the divorce she stated that she had a letter from his uncle which said that Clarington was in jail in Canada. None of their children survived infancy. She remarried in 1887 to Horace W Inghram.

He married Margaret Jane ("Jenny") Wishart about 1884 in Gleichen, Alberta, Canada. They had at least two children -- Edward Allen Oscar Wilson (b. 1885) and Mildred Ann Eliza Wilson (b. 1888), both born at Red Deer, Alberta. He served about six months of a five year enlistment with the NW Mounted Police at Calgary, Alberta, beginning in November, 1887. Their records indicate that he deserted on May 9, 1888, at Calgary. He apparently never returned to his family at Red Deer. Margaret remarried about 1898 to John James Cumming.

In June, 1888, he moved to Tillamook County, Oregon, where he was instrumental in the founding of the town of Bay City. He also opened a bank and started the Tillamook Headlight newspaper.

He married Emma Jacoby on Jan. 8, 1889 in Bay City, Oregon. They had one son, Leo. They were divorced (grounds: "desertion") in 1894. She remarried in 1895 to Alexander F. Finlayson.

He married Margaret D. Mogan about Apr. 19, 1899 in San Francisco. They had four children, two of whom died in infancy. Clarington/Clarence disappeared on June 1, 1904 (see news article). In light of his previous record of desertions, it is assumed that his disappearance was voluntary. Margaret remarried in 1916 to Walter M. Harp.

No further record of him has been found.
