Lena was born at rural Ayr and graduated from Kelly School in rural Adams County. She married Elmer Grothen in 1919. He died in 1961. They moved to Hastings from a farm southwest of Hastings in 1952.
She was survived by two sons, Wendell of Hastings and Orlo of Mar Vista, CA; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
