Charlotte was the youngest of the 17 known children of William Vance, born when he was 67 years of age. In the confused household of the late 1830s in Readfield, Lot Myrick Morrill was made guardian of her and her near siblings. When she was 18, Lot Myrick Morrill married her. Afterwards he became Governor of Maine, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of the Treasury under U.S. Grant. Charlotte had four girls and two boys. Both sons died young, but three of the daughters lived to old age. By all accounts she had a happy marriage, but Lot Morrill died in 1883 when she was 57.
