Leona told me an interesting little story about her marriage to Carl.

When Carl and she married in 1930, Leona worked for the Montgomery Wards' store. At the time, many young, single women worked for the store; Leona said, "she and the other girls were concerned that if they married, they would lose their jobs," since the economy was so bleak. The Great Depression was in full swing by early 1930, and life was a struggle for any person, man or woman, to find and hold a job; therefore, Leona and Carl feared letting her co-workers (and family) learn about their marriage.

Regardless of these concerns, Carl and Leona went off to Valparaiso, Indiana the third week of January, 1930 and were married secretly on the eighteenth. When the couple returned to Chicago, neither told their families of the marriage, and each continued to live with their respective parents; until that is, that Leona discovered she was pregnant with the couple's first child who was born in early January 1931.
