Sarah "Sally" Fields was the daughter of Richard Fields and Elizabeth Murrell. She was born in Albemarle, Virginia in 1750. She married Thomas Coffey in 1778 in Virginia. In about 1778 Thomas and Sally Coffey moved from Virginia to Wilkes County (now Caldwell CO.), North Carolina and raised 9 children on a 25-acre plantation on the upper waters of the Yadkin River near the present day town of Patterson.

Note: (The date of birth was derived from the U.S. and International Marriage Record, 1560-1900 but no record has been found to confirm its accuracy. The gravestone does not provide a date of death. The date stated here was obtained from the book, "Thomas Coffey and his descendants, a brief sketch of the life of Thomas Coffey", compiled by a descendant, Laurence H. Coffey in 1931. It states, “Thomas Coffey died in 1825 at the age of 83 ....... His wife died a few years later .....” As a result, the date here should be taken as approximate. )

Sarah and Thomas Coffey were at first buried in the Hull/Hall Cemetery. In later years, their great grandsons moved them to Harpers Chapel when Hull/Hall cemetery became neglected and overgrown.

Children not listed below are:
Sarah "Sallie" (Coffey) Steuart, 1792-1865
Jesse Coffey
Rev. Reuben A. Coffey
Lewis Coffey
McCaleb Coffey
