Marian Louise Baker worked as a cashier and secretary in the treasurer's office at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Penna. On Tuesday, January 10th 1950 she was picked up and given a ride at 2:15 PM from outside of the Lancaster Post Office (on the southeast corner of North Prince St and West Chestnut St) by acquaintance and married Franklin and Marshall student Edward Lester Gibbs (Memorial #76555590) in his 1947 two tone (freedom blue and ozone blue) Chevrolet Fleetmaster Club Coupe. Edward drove her south on Prince St, in and out of the Meadia Heights Country Club, continued south on Route 222, then he turned east, ending up at the property of Martin Mylin Harnish (Memorial# 96516107) at about N 40.0058° W 76.28751° in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and murdered Miss Baker there. Her smashed watch stopped at 2:36 PM. The direct route from the post office to the Harnish cottage is about an 8 minute, 3.4 mile drive, so maybe the extended trip took about 15 minutes. His motive was unclear but he repeatedly claimed he acted on impulse. Edward was executed in the electric chair at Rockview Penitentiary, Centre County, Pennsylvania. See Murder in Paradise (1954) by Richard Gehman, who was married to Estelle Parsons (Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress in Bonnie and Clyde). Submitted by Tom Raub.
