John was the son of Reuben and Lydia (Shaner) Rice. He came as a young boy, from Hawkins County, Tennessee to Randolph County, Arkansas. He married Bathsheba Hudson, daughter of Edward and Mary (Wheat) Hudson, in 1828.
John and Bathseba had the following children:
Louisa Rice 1830-1850
Reuben Rice 1832-1865
Edward Hudson Rice 1834-1906
William Littleton Rice 1836-1900
Lydia Rice Forshee 1838-1880
Mary Ann Rice Neel 1840-1923
Bathsheba Rice Chamberlain 1843-1870
Penelope Rice 1846-?

After John died, Bathsheba married a man named Tilford Bozarth, in 1851, and they moved the entire family to Washington County, Missouri. The 3 sons all served during the Civil War, Reuben died in the POW Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Although NO stone is found, I believe John to be buried near his parents who owned the land surrounding the Upshaw Cemetery. Bathsheba's parents are also buried nearby.

DNA Note An anonymous descendant/donor provided a DNA test to the Rice FDNA project labeled SM04 which links him to group 7 in that project. They indicated they were a descendant of John's son William Littleton Rice of Irondale, Washington County, MO. Feel free to contact the owner of this memorial as they match exactly to my husbands DNA test # 283160.
