Pvt. Skolaut survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77. On the ship's roster, his name is spelled Skolant.

He returned from World War I aboard the "Walter A. Luckenbach" in March 1919 listed as Albert J. Sklolaut. He is a private in the Camp Travis Detachment, 160th Infantry.

On the "Tuscania," he listed his father, Albert "Skolant" [sic], RFD 4, San Antonio, Texas, as his next-of-kin. On the return voyage, his father's surname is spelled Sklolaut, at the same San Antonio address.
