Mr. Verne E. Babcock, 71, of Morris, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2011, at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore, Ill., with his loving family by his side.
Born July 5, 1939, in Morris, Verne was the son of LaVerne and Geraldine (Murray) Babcock. He was educated in Morris schools and graduated from Morris Community High School with the Class of 1957.
Verne proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Alaska for three years.
Verne married Lorraine M. Swanson on Oct. 7, 1964, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris. He was employed as a mail carrier and postal clerk at the Morris Post Office for 21 years. He managed the R-Quest Kennels in Morris for 13 years.
Verne was a NASCAR fan and followed Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He was also a fan of the Chicago Bears and a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. He had his own vegetable garden, he enjoyed his dogs and he treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was a former member of Mazon American Legion Post 352 and Morris American Legion Post 294.
Survivors include his loving wife of more than 46 years, Lorraine; their four devoted children, DeAnne (Paul Mandrik) Sereno of Aurora, Ill, Todd (Rachael) Babcock of Seneca, Dawn (Bryan) Baker of Morris, and Darci (Brett) Herzon of Morris; eight grandchildren, Angela and Lauren Sereno, Raegan and Kohl Babcock, Jessica, Jennifer, Samantha and Savannah Baker; two sisters, Betty Williams of Mazon and Norma (Duane) Engelhart of Springfield, N.J.; one brother, Max (Donna) Babcock of Morris; sister-in-law, Darva Babcock of Morris; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, until the time of funeral services at 3 p.m. at U.C. Davis & Sons Funeral Home Ltd., 301 W. Washington St., Morris. Rev. Winn Alley will officiate.
Private family inurnment will occur July 5, 2011, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill. The Morris Color Guard will conduct military honors.
