She married Alvie Olin Scarlett March 16, 1938. They were married for 71 years. Shortly after their marriage, Madeline and Alvie moved to Idaho with their families. They lived in Princeton, Idaho for a short time before moving to Ontario, Oregon in 1939. Their first son, Gary, was born there in 1940. In the fall of that year the family moved to Boise. In 1943 the second son, Douglas, was born and was followed, in 1950, by a third son Mark.
In 1956 Madeline went to work as a secretary at the Idaho Education Association. She retired from there as Executive Office Manager in December, 1981.
Madeline and Alvie enjoyed square dancing and round dancing, and belonged to several dance groups in the area. They also played pinochle regularly for many years with a local group of friends.
After retirement they traveled extensively throughout the U.S. Madeline loved cats and, since Alvie's death in 2009, she has enjoyed the constant companionship of her kitties, Saint Nicholas and Samantha.
Madeline has been a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church for many years. She was a strong person and she instilled in us the value of family, a lesson that is being passed down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all of us, but our memory of her will remain an influence on each one of us.
Madeline is survived by her three sons: Gary (Lorelei) of Boise, Douglas (Mary Ann), of Fruitland, and Mark (Mabel), of Forest Grove, OR; her grandchildren: Cameron (Lori) Scarlett, Desiree (Christopher) Graham, Danielle Scarlett, Douglas Scarlett, Jr., Heather (Garry) Jones, Angee (Chris) Brewer, Adam (Cathy) Scarlett and Randy (Melinda) Scarlett; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie; her sisters: Belva Shelton and Jane Draper; brothers: Arthur Earl Adams and Gerald Eldon Adams; and an infant grandson.
There will be a visitation with the family Thursday, September 22nd from 6 to 8 P.M. at Bowman Funeral Parlor 5525 North Glenwood Street, Boise, Idaho. A graveside service will take place Friday,September 23rd at 11:00 A.M. at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Oregon.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made, in Madeline's name, to the Idaho Humane Society at 4775 West Dorman Street, Boise, Idaho 83705.
