Fred Adkins, age 83, of Grinnell, died Sunday morning at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He had been bedfast since 1957.

He was the son of James F. and Sidney J. Parmley Adkins, born February 10, 1873 in Jasper County, Iowa, one of a family of 9 children. He received his education in the Rock Creek township schools and was married to Linda Parmley on February 25, 1903, at Kellogg.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, at home, and three sons, Kenneth H., of Grinnell, Wathal L., of West Des Moines, and Audrey W., of Des Moines, as well as eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, Mrs. Florence Dearings of Cadogap, Arkansas, Mrs. Gertrude Reutter, and Henry (Geneva) Ahrens; Will Adkins and R.H. Adkins, all of Grinnell.

Mr. Adkins had lived in this community all of his lifetime, and had farmed until his retirement in 1954. He had regularly attended the First Baptist church until his health failed.

Funeral services for Mr. Fred Adkins will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. C.E. Kingsley, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood cemetery.
