In 1941 she gave up her job as editor of children's books and focused on her writings. She wrote as many as five books a year. In addition to publishing books under her own name, she used the pen names Timothy Hay, Golden MacDonald,Kaintucky Brown and Juniper Sage.
She was a prolific writer of children's books, including such famous books as Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny

Her personal life was often described as tumultuous.
Reportedly she lived in a house in Maine which she called "The Only House" where her friends, associates, editors, and lovers passed through.
She is known to have had numerous lovers including a long-term relationship with Blanche Oelrichs (pen name: Michael Strange),who was a poet/playwright, actress, and the former wife of John Barrymore. They were together for ten years in Manhatten, New York. Blanche died in 1950. In 1952 Margaret met and became engaged to James Stillman 'Pebble' Rockefeller Jr. They never married, however. She died in 1952 while in Nice, France from an embolism following surgery for appendicitis.
Her ashes were brought to Maine and scattered in the ocean off Vinalhaven,Maine. A simple stone marker on her island property commemorates her life.

In her will, Margaret requested that her body be cremated and her ashes scattered to the sea at her beloved Only House in Maine. A simple rough stone was to mark the site with the words "Margaret Wise Brown, writer of Songs and Nonsense."
