Eljein Duke Barnes, age 82, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was born in the Tyus community of Carroll County on September 17, 1926, the daughter of the late Clifford T. and Blanche Thompson Duke. She joined Centralhatchee Baptist Church in 1941 and later joined Bethesda Baptist Church and served as the senior ladies teacher, W.M.U. Director, church Clerk and many other teaching positions. She graduated in 1943 as Valedictorian of her Centralhatchee High School Class. Upon her graduation, she was visited at her home by Dr. Irvine S. Ingram, who persuaded her to enroll at West Georgia College, where she graduated in 1945 with a Business Degree. She was a member of the University of West Georgia Alumni Association and Bethesda Baptist Church. She was employed by the Peoples Bank in 1948 and retired in 1988.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Dumah Barnes on June 22, 2008, to whom she married on August 20, 1960; sister, Doris Duke, and brother, Bobby Duke. Survivors include her two sons and daughter-in-law of Carrollton, a sister, a granddaughter, and a sister-in-law of Carrollton.

Funeral service conducted on November 16 at Bethesda Baptist Church with Pastor, Reverend Carlton Rivers and Reverend Stephen Peeples officiating. Music provided by the Heavens Echoes. Interment in the Bethseda Baptist Church Cemetery with Jerry Lee, Pat Albright, Vic Barnes, Dale Huckeba, Doug Adams and Henry Branam serving as Pallbearers. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel, Carrollton, has charge of arrangements.
