"Donie Hester Casey was also known at times as Donnie, Dona or Donna. She was born on June 4, 1867 in Jackson County, Indiana, near Russell Chapel Methodist Church. Her parents were William H Casey and his first wife Mary C. Anderson Casey. Her mother died when she was less than two years old. In 18780 her father married Elizabeth Houghland Cole, a widow with three children. Donie grew up in a household with two older full brothers, an older full sister, who would marry in 1871 and move to California in 1874, and three children of her stepmother, all girls. However, her father and stepmother would have three additional children between 1872 and 1882. And, her father would marry two additional times before he died in 1899. Donie may have felt isolated even with all of these people around.
"On July 21, 1889 she married Charles Willard Hawn in Jackson County. He was born October 11, 1867 (per obituary, year 1868 on tombstone) at Little York in nearby Washington County. His father was Isaac Hawn (son of John Hawn and Rachel Dukes) and his mother Nancy Huckleberry (daughter of Rachel Crockett Huckleberry). Charles was a farmer, but he expanded his own farm operations into custom cutting oats and wheat for other farmers. He owned a gasoline powered shredder that farmers in the area would hire to shred corn plants into animal feed. Charles lost a hand while operating the shredder.
"Charles died first, June 19, 1921, and was buried in the Russell Chapel Cemetery. Donie died February 3, 1929 and was buried beside her husband. Seven of their eight children are buried in the same cemetery. The Hawn family was homogeneous, without the disruptions of her father's family, and the children stayed close to home. All but one of the eight children would marry. The number of descendants is very large."
