Kathrine Marie Anderson, age 91 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.

She was born December 3, 1919 in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew Pete and Marriane(Jorgensen)Anderson. Kathrine was raised in Centerville and graduated from Centerville High School in 1937. She attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1950.

Prior to attending college, Kathrine enlisted in the United States Navy on July 13, 1944. She trained for medical work in Bethesda, MD. She was then transferred to work as a hospital aide in Norman, OK and Gulf Port, MS in the Veterans Hospital. Kathrine was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 4, 1946. Kathrine was authorized to wear the Americaan Campaign ribbon and the World War II Victory ribbon.

Upon her discharge from the Navy, Kathrine wanted to be a teacher but instead enjoyed making quilts. She lived in Des Moines with her sister Mildred and worked at a custom drapery shop. Her father's health began to fail and the family asked her to come home in 1969. Kathrine worked in the hospital in Centerville, Iowa and took care of her mother and father until their passing.

In her free time she enjoyed reading western novels. Kathrine was a huge fan of "Star Trek," both the movies and the books. She also enjoyed geneology, including her writing stories about family members. She was a member of the First Evangelical Church in Centerville.

Kathrine is survived by her son Neil(Denise)Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri; her sister Mildred Ross of Russell, Iowa; a sister-in-law Mary Ellen Anderson of Newton, Iowa; two granddaughters; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, David and Arnold Anderson; and a sister, Vera Hayes.

Funeral services with military honors will be held 10:30 am, Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Kathy Franzenburg officiating. Burial will follow in the Hanes Cemetery north of Centerville. A visitation will be held on Friday at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6-8 pm. A memorial has been established to the family.
