The people of Searsburg and vicinity were shocked to learn of the terrible accident on February 28, which resulted in the death of John Clement at the North Adams hospital on Mar 1. Mr. Clement was sawing in his mill when in some way a piece of a board flew from the saw striking him on the head and rendering him unconscious. His son, seeing the condition of his father, shut the mill down and with the assistance of another brother carried the injured man to his home a few rods away. Dr. Dunn of Wilmington was hurriedly called and saw that the only chance of saving the injured man's life was to hurry him to the hospital which was done, and an operation was performed by Drs. Dunn and Stafford. Several pieces of skull were removed but the injured man never rallied from the operation. Mr. Clement was born in Canada about 1850 and lived there until he was about 18 years of age, when he went to the lumber district of Michigan. After several years in the middle west he came to Vermont and about 30 years ago located in Searsburg, where he married Miss Mary LeRay, who died about two years ago, and raised a family of 11 children, six girls and five boys, Mrs. Edward Belknap, John D., Mrs. Osman Day, Joseph, Corris, Corlis, Bessie, Adolphus, Lyman of Searsburg and Mrs. Murray Thomas and Dora of Pittsfield. Together with the widow and children, two brothers in New York and a niece Mrs. Herbert Rice of Pittsfield are left to mourn his loss. Mr. Clement was one of the leading farmers and lumbermen in Searsburg and had held many town offices. He was selectman and school director at the time of his death. His loss will be keenly felt by his family and all who knew him.
