Businessman, Rotarian
Carl Wahlstrom, 86, Dies

Services for Carl J. Wahlstrom, 86, a Sparta businessman, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Hessel-Cheslek Funeral Home in Sparta.
Wahlstrom, a distant relative of King Gustav of Sweden, died Tuesday in an area nursing home after a lingering illness. His wife, Katherine, said Wahlstrom's grandmother was a cousin of King Gustav's grandfather.
"It's a distant relationship, and my husband was a very private man who didn't talk about that," she said.
A native of Chicago, Wahlstrom moved to Sparta in 1950 and opened Wahlstrom's Dry Goods store, which he ran for 22 years. He was a life member of the Sparta Masonic Lodge Number 334 F&AM, and the Scottish Rite Consistory, Saladin Temple Mystic Shrine.
Wahlstrom was a past president of the Sparta Chamber of Commerce and the local Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Grand Rapids Elks Lodge Number 48.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; a son, Douglas; and two daughters Ruth Wahlstrom and Joan Gomez, both of California; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
