He lived for many years near Ivy Depot, then moved with his first wife, Eliza Greenway (his father's niece) to Missouri as did his children also. After his wife's death while on a visit to Virginia, he married second, Mrs. Mary Ann Wood nee Miller, daughter of Capt. Miller, an Englishman. They had no children and after some years in Missouri they returned to Virginia, where Joseph died. He is buried at "Locust Hill", Ivy Depot. He died at the home of Gabriel Harper, "Red Banks" (afterward owned by Peter McGee). A letter of inquiry from Mrs. Lucy Stone, Harrisonville, Missouri, regarding her paternal ancestor, Lieutenant Hudson Martin, of the Revolution, brought out the fact that her mother was a daughter of Joseph Harper and Eliza Greenway.
