James served in the CSA 4th Battalion, Co. "C", Hilliard's Legion: Barbour Light Artillery, or Kolb's Battery. He enlisted in Chambers County, Alabama on 15 December 1862. He was at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, and wounded on 19-20 September 1863. He was taken to the Atlanta Hospital where he died on 7 October 1863.
After the war, his wife Mary Ann Hathcoat Foster married John Cain circa 1865 and moved to Hopkin County, Texas.
