Killed By Auto

George W. Greenwood, 88, Struck While Crossing Street
Accident Occurred at Thirteenth Street and Western Ave.

George W. Greenwood, 88, of 1301 Western ave., was fatally injured Sunday night when he was struck by an automobile at Thirteenth street and Western avenue. The auto was driven by Glenn Logan, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Logan, 1254 Topeka boulevard.
Mr. Greenwood had gone for a walk. He had started across Thirteenth street, it was said, when Logan came west on Thirteenth street. The motorist failed to see Greenwood until too late to stop but made an effort to avoid striking him by swerving to one side. The fender of the car, however, struck Mr. Greenwood, knocking him down and injuring him, so that he died three hours later in a local hospital. Logan stopped his car immediately following the accident and rendered what aid he could.

Veteran of the Civil War
Mr. Greenwood was born in Mercer county, Illinois, May 20, 1838. He was educated at Lombard college in Galesburg, Ill. In 1861 he married Sarah M. Hardy. When the civil was broke out, Greenwood enlisted, serving as a captain of Company C 11th Illinois cavalry and participated in the battles of Shiloh, Pittsburgh Landing, and after four years of service was honorably discharged from the army. At the close of the war he engaged in farming near Galesburg until 1872 when he brought his family to Kansas.

He was a member of Lincoln Post No. 1, G.A.R., and the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Greenwood served in the army during the Civil war, his father was engaged in the war of 1812, and his grandfather participated in the Revolutionary war.

He settled near St. Marys and famed there until 1890 when he retired, moving to Topeka and building the Greenwood home at Thirteenth and Western where he has lived since that time.
Mrs. Greenwood died in 1925. At the Shawnee County Old Settlers' reunion in 1924 Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood were honored for being the oldest married couple in attendance. They had been married sixty-three years at that time.

Surviving Mr. Greenwood are one son, A.W. Greenwood of Topeka; one daughter, Mrs. R.G. Merrick of Topeka; five grandchildren, George W. Greenwood and Miss Octavia O'Neil of Topeka, Mrs. Roy McKenna and Robert G. Merrick Jr., of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Z.T. Hoehn of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Robert W. Merrick and Betty Lee McKenna, of Kansas City, Mo.
