Luvern Clifford McGrand, 81, of Minnetrista passed away peacefully Monday Sept. 5, 2011 at his home in Calimesa, Calif., with his faithful dog Frosty by his side.

Vern was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. In 1956, he married Nellie Mae Dearmin, making their home and raising their children in Minnetrista. In 1972, Vern and his friend Robert (Whip) Frovarp went into business together. What they lacked in capital they made up for in desire and wits. The company they built, Kenko, was the first in the sewer and water business to perform public works contracts from the West Coast to the East Coast. At its peak Kenko employed 600 people and completed large public works contracts in twenty-two separate states. The company's personality was a reflection of Vern's hard charging and unrelenting quest to be the best in his industry. Vern McGrand was a man for the ages, a visionary, a risk taker and a humanitarian of the first order.

Survivors include his loving children, Jeff, Jill and Scott McGrand, and Kathy Barri; daughter-in-laws Patty and Laurie McGrand; grandchildren Robin (Ian) Pinegar, Nathan, Sena, Alexander, Tyler, Travis, Sam and Kendall McGrand, Mikey and Nellie Barri, Louis Belanger and David Hutsell; great grandson Nolan Pinegar; brother Phillip (Jackie) McGrand; sisters Mary (Roger) Schibursky and Jeanie Born; sister-in-law Beverly (Richard) Hart; nieces Hally McGrand, Sloan Saba and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nellie Mae; sons Macky Belanger and Robert Kreiser; father Clifford McGrand; mothers Rose Luxenburg and Lillian McGrand; mother-in-law Leota Dearmin and father-in-law Dale Dearmin.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Huber Funeral Home, Mound, and at the church one hour before the service. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 2385 Commerce Boulevard, Mound. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota.
