His priorities in life were God first, family second and career third. As a dedicated servant of the Lord, he was an active church leader and participated as church elder, children’s choir director, organist, Walther league director and senior choir member.
Norbert was born July 25, 1927, in Chamberlain, S.D., to the late Pastor Walter and Adele Going, and married the love of his life, Muriel Marie Stein, on June 9, 1951, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Glendale. They met at Concordia University River Forest. Following graduation, his first call was to De Soto, Mo., as a principal and teacher. His next call was to First Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Cedarburg, where he taught for many years. For two years, he sold World Book Encyclopedias, but his love of teaching brought him back to the Brown Deer School District, where he retired at the age of 70. In addition to helping Muriel raise their six girls and his full-time teaching career, this dedicated, hard-working man was a tree nursery owner, landscaper, paper delivery man and a Freeman builder employee. Norbert was an avid athlete; he also enjoyed camping, fishing, card playing, horseshoes and watching his children and grandchildren in their various sports.
He was a great husband, a great father, a great grandfather, a great friend, a great person and a great Christian. He is survived by his wife, Muriel, of Cedarburg; children, Becky (Richard) Behrens of Cedarburg, Cindy (Pete) Petric of Colorado, Lisa Schlough of Grafton, Teresa (Devin) Hafemeister of Cedarburg, Caralee (Jerry) Jacque of Fredonia and Melissa (Kurt) Gierach of Mequon; grandchildren, Shane (Lindsay) DeFendi of Sussex, Chris DeFendi of Milwaukee, Shawn (Alisa) Rogers of Minnesota, Jason Nenning of Colorado, Brandon Thelen of Fredonia, Austin Thelen of Cedarburg and Taylor Hafemeister of Cedarburg; great-grandchildren, Caiden, Rylen and Kyler DeFendi, Joe and Sam Rogers, Kenneth, Jacob, Madyline and Steven Michael Nenning; and sister-in-law, Lois Going of Nebraska. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 3:30 p.m. at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, W67 N622 Evergreen Blvd. Cedarburg. Interment at Zur Ruhe Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Memorials to First Immanuel Lutheran Church appreciated.
