Goes Through Bridge. Anson C. Vian Killed. Ford Car Crashes Through Bridge and Lands in Water Below.
While leaving Fort Benton about 11 o'clock Wednesday evening Anson C. Vian, a farmer living about five miles southeast of here, lost control of his Ford car when starting to cross the bridge across the Missouri river and the car, going at a rather rapid rate of speed, scraped the railing for about 30 feet on the right hand side of the bridge and then crossed over to the left side where the railing showed signs of being scraped for a number of feet. The car then returned to the right side and after scratching the bannister for some feet, broke through and fell to the water below, where Mr. Vian was rescued a few minutes later. Upon being taken out of the water it was found he had died of injuries received in the fall as no water was removed from his lungs. John Ward, Jr., noticed the car crossing the bridge and saw it make the plunge from the bridge and he at once secured help and it was only a question of a few minutes until the dead man was removed from underneath the car.
Mr. Vian was about 40 years of age and came to Montana about ten or twelve years ago, settling in the Elim country, afterwards moving to a ranch near the site of the Transcontinental well.
He leaves to mourn his untimely death his wife and a brother, who had just recently left Fort Benton for Whitefish and who returned here immediately upon his learning of the accident. He also has a brother living in Wisconsin and his father resides in North Dakota and two sisters in Minnesota.
The funeral services were held from Mount Auburn chapel on Saturday morning and were conducted entirely by the I. O. O. F. lodge, of which he was a member in North Dakota. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
