She was born Jan. 22, 1911, into a pioneer Runnels County family, the daughter of J.W. and Sara "Sadie" Bigby. She and her siblings were no strangers to the hard work required of the entire family on a farm and ranch in southern Runnels County. The strong work ethic, sense of duty and need for an education, enforced by her parents, served her well throughout her 100 years and 7 months of life as a devoted wife, mother and school teacher. Mabel met her husband while attending Sul Ross College. They traveled together on the West Coast for his work as a government surveyor just prior to World War II. They returned to Texas so he could volunteer for the service after Pearl Harbor. After his discharge from Goodfellow Air Base, she supported the family by teaching while he attended Texas A&M under the GI Bill. The family were longtime residents of the Lake View community, rebuilding after the tornado of 1953, and charter members of Lakeview Methodist Church. She retired from teaching while at Lakeview Junior High. She also attended Sunday school at Sierra Vista Methodist and services at First United Methodist when able.
