Lafayette was a farmer and millwright working at the mill in Rings Mill with his 2 brothers Walter and Alexander. Being a well built man and strongest of the three, he was in charge of loading and unloading the wagons of grain and flour. As the mill was a gathering place for the locals to gather and talk, the subject of how many sacks of grain Lafayette could lift then developed into a contest. During one of these events of lifting more than 100lb sacks at once, he over extended and ruptured himself to the extent that it unfortunately took his life.
