Mr. Bingham was a public school teacher, and active with the athletic teams in several places in Louisiana and Arkansas. He was the superintendent of schools at Strong in Union County, Arkansas. On May 9, 1927, a devastating tornado virtually destroyed that little town. Mr. Bingham dismissed school early that day because of the threatening weather conditions, and told all the students to go straight home. They failed to obey, and several students were killed when they went to their after-school jobs instead of going home. Mr. Bingham was deeply involved in the rescue and recovery efforts from the tornado.
