ASKREN

James Samuel Askren, son of James L. and Eva M. (Bingaman) Askren, was born July 19, 1925 in Lucas County, Iowa. He passed away Dec. 18, 2000 at the Lucas County Health Center.

James spent all of his life in Lucas County, except for the five years he spent in the military. During his time in the service, he was stationed overseas.

Following his discharge from the service, Jim was employed at C.D. Hess Quarry, Burlington Northern Truck Line, and Massey Ferguson as a truck driver. He retired after 12 years of being an over the road driver for Massey Ferguson. In 1990, Jim went to work for Super Wash Car Wash and worked there until September of 2000 when his health forced him to retire.

In 1956, Jim was united in marriage to Nancy Grove. To this union four children were born, Dian, Jim, Donna and Deb.

He enjoyed spending time with his family. When his seven grandchildren were small, Jim always had time to push the Cozy Coupe toy car up and down the sidewalk. It was probably the only push car in town with 100,000 miles on it and powered by Grandpa. He enjoyed his trips to Rutledge with his son, grandson, and friend, Ivan Reynolds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Donna Sue; his sister, Wilma Thompson; brothers-in-law, Cleo Thompson, Richard Chamberlain and Hugh Randall; and nephew, Bobby Clark.

He will be especially missed by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Dian Rowland and husband Bryan; son, Jim Askren and wife Julie; daughter, Deb Mason and husband Ken; grandchildren, Nicholas and Kristen Rowland, Jimmy, Elizabeth and Brad Askren, and Ryan and Michael Mason; as well as many friends.

Masonic rites were held Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Fielding Funeral Home by members of the Chariton Masonic Lodge # 63 A.F. & A. M. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Funeral Home. Evangelist Joseph Smith officiated. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Serving as bearers were Bryan Rowland, Nicholas Rowland, Jimmy Askren, Ken Mason, Tom Allen and Gary Chamberlain. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Carl L. Caviness Post 102 of Chariton.
