Eugene Bley, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Bley, was instantly killed July 8, near Hamlet, when he fell from the rear of the family pickup. Eugene was sitting on a cream can in the rear of the pickup, and upon hitting a rough spot in the road, he lost his balance and fell from the vehicle. He landed directly in the path of the rear wheel which passed over his head, crushing the skull and causing instant death.

Eugene was a very bright lad, being exceptionally well gifted in mechanics, which he had learned from working with the various machinery on the farm, with his father.

He was an active and faithful member of his Sunday School class and a faithful member of the Eden Missionary Church, and had many friends among his associates.

Gene's presence will be sorely missed, as will his cheerful disposition and kind and loving ways.

Obituary
Edward Eugene Bley was born in the grandparental home near Stratton, Nebraska, December 13, 1935, later moving with his parents to their present home near Hamlet, Nebr. He departed this life in a fatal accident, which occurred near Hamlet, causing instant death, July 8, 1949, at the age of 13 years, 6 months and 25 days.

Gene attended the Wauneta school for the past two years where he took active part in both music and athletics. He would have been in the eighth grade this coming school year.

Gene gave his heart to Jesus at an early age and was baptized on Sunday afternoon, August 4, 1946 at Hamlet. He was very faithful in attending Sunday School and performing his duties as a follower of Jesus Christ.

Gene's cheerful disposition, love, and helpfulness will be greatly missed by his loved ones; also by his many friends and playmates.

He leaves to mourn, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Bley, two sisters, Lovina and Carrol, one grandfather, Benjamin Bley, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Eden Missionary Church, July 10, 1949, at 10:30, with Rev. Ezra Zimmerman in charge, assisted by Rev. J.J. Christner. A male quartet, Ellis Carpenter, Ralph Carpenter, Melvin Judd, and Elmer Carpenter sang "Sometime", "Do Lord", and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Pallbearers were Donald Egle, Dale Maris, Delbert Maris, Dale Richards, Gail Zimmerman and Eugene Gauger.

Gene was laid to rest in the Eden cemetery, waiting the summons to meet the Lord in the air at his coming.

"When the Roll is Called up Yonder"
Is a song we love to sing;
God called Gene, it was his number
For him the Golden Bells did ring.

God has called him for a purpose
This on earth we will not know
But our savior, He has promised
This in heaven He will show.

But today there is rejoicing
Up in heaven I am sure
For another saint has entered
Over on the other shore.

Gene's rejoicing 'cause a mother
And a father who are here,
Showed a son the way Eternal
And a God that he should fear.

He was taken to church on Sunday,
Where he heard the gospel true.
When Gene gave his testimony
He said with Christ, he would go through.

He did not know that God would call him
From this earth so soon, I'm sure;
But our God does have a purpose
And he knows just what it's for.

Oh, there's going to be a great reunion
Some day on that Golden Shore,
Where there'll be no tears forever,
And we shall live forever more.

Mothers, dads, have you been faithful
Taking yours to Sunday School?
Where those little ones have heard the gospel
And will not, just play a fool?

Don't forget it's God who calls us.
When he says, "You've been here long enough."
Then's the time, that life shall leave you
Will your path be smooth or rough

God's not willing any perish
But that we reign with him on high
Let's be careful how we live, friend
So we know how we shall die.

God is calling here for someone,
Who will take the Gospel through,
Will you be the one who hides your life, friend,
Or will you say, "What can I do?"

God is giving out this challenge,
Oh accept him, yes today
For you may not live tomorrow,
Open now, your heart, I pray.

May our God above all others
Give his comfort and his power,
To the ones who lost this dear one,
In this dark and trying hour.
